The story behind our Moon Rock Jewelry

13.JULY.2024, by Fin Matson

What are Moon Rocks... other than rocks?

Well, they’re literally what the name suggests — rocks from the moon.

First, let me clear up a common misunderstanding. Moon rocks are not moonstones. Moonstones are earthly minerals known for their shimmering appearance.

Moon rocks, on the other hand, are parts of meteorites that originated from the moon. These pieces of the moon’s surface were knocked loose by other meteorites crashing into the moon, catapulted into space, and eventually made their way to earth as 'shooting stars'.

So yes, if you have a piece of our Imbrium series, you’re literally holding a real piece of our moon in your hand! Each piece of our jewelry that includes moon rocks, sourced from reputable collections, comes with a certificate of authenticity from recognised organisations that proves the origin of the meteorite.

Why Moon Rocks?

Choosing moon rocks for our jewelry wasn’t just a business decision; it was a deeply personal call for me. My connection to the moon has always been intimate and deeply poetic. In the early days of my photography journey, I was living in the city for a while, and my opportunities to connect with nature and shoot were limited. However, the moon was always there. So, shooting photographs of the full moon every month became a ritual, a moment of peace in the chaos of life. It inspired me to pursue photography more seriously, helping me build a foundation of hope during tough times. This connection is what drove me to incorporate real moon rocks into the jewelry you see today.

A few frames from that time...

The meaning of Moon Rocks

Wearing a piece of the moon is very special to me, and every time I look at my jewelry, I feel so much. It looks different every day, depending on the light. Nature did not intend perfection and consistency; every single piece from the series is unique in its own special way. From the grooves in its texture to the slight change in hues, its details are subconsciously different.

But what I also really love about these pieces is the thought of giving someone a piece of the moon, a piece of another world. More than just a gift, it’s a statement of devotion. An act that says more than words could ever try... These rocks are not just geological objects; they become a story wrapped around your finger (or neck), and our jewelry is not just worn but experienced.

Interestingly, many of our customers find a deeper, almost healing connection to these moon rocks. There’s something grounding about wearing rocks that have traveled hundreds of thousands of miles through space, surviving intense elements, only to find their way to you. And to make it even more special, moon rocks are often considered sacred gifts from other worlds that have healing properties that aid in spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being. They supposedly stimulate the 'Third Eye' and 'Crown Chakra', providing spiritual guidance and emotional support. They also offer a grounding presence by embodying resilience and transformation in the way they show up here. The rarity of moon rocks brings a connection to space, providing a calming reminder of our place in the universe. And I genuinely have to say, that’s exactly how I feel when I wear them.

Making jewelry out of Moon Rocks

The process of creating jewelry from moon rocks is incredibly complex. When we first decided to incorporate moon rocks into our pieces, we knew little about what it would require. The rocks, sourced from various sites in Africa, come with certificates of authenticity from top labs confirming their origins, proving that the journey from the moon to us was as real as the pull of the tides. But that was just the beginning...

Transforming these rocks into jewelry wasn’t easy. We actually lost a significant number of rocks in the process of learning how to properly cut and polish them. Each moon rock is unique, requiring individual attention and techniques. Setting these rocks into rings and necklaces while maintaining their integrity requires not just skill but also a deep respect for their origin.

Nevertheless, we got the hang of things, and the real artistry began to unfold when we perfected the system. It starts with the cutting process, a challenging task that requires precision to preserve their natural looks while revealing their inner patterns. Our skilled artisans use specialised tools to make precise incisions, ensuring that each cut maximises the rock’ unique structure without causing damage (which is easier said than done).

Following is the polishing, a delicate procedure that enhances the rocks' unique textures and hues. This step involves multiple stages of fine grinding and buffing, using a variety of abrasives to bring out the natural shimmer of the moon rock while maintaining its raw character. The goal is to get a polished surface that reflects light, yet still showcases the stone's foundation and intricate details.

Finally, each moon rock is set into a ring or necklace. This involves carefully designing and crafting settings that secure the rock. This entire process, honed through trial and error, ensures that every piece of our jewelry is a masterpiece of craftsmanship. We’ve spent countless hours and resources perfecting these techniques, and each step is executed with great care and precision, reflecting our commitment to delivering jewelry that is as extraordinary as the moon rocks themselves.
